In response to "My favorite line from this week's Chernobyl was when Gorbachev asks "What do you mean 'impact'?" -- nm" by GregW

For those not watching, it went like this:

After explaining that the shockwave would kill everyone in Kiev and some in Minsk, Ulana Khomyuk says the release of radiation will impact all of Soviet Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Byelorussia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and most of East Germany.

Legasov answers Gorbachev's question:
For much of the area, a nearly permanent disruption of food and water supply, steep increase in cancer and birth defects. Many deaths.

For Byelorussia and Ukraine, it means completely uninhabitable for a minimum 100 years.
