To me it makes sense that he won. Most people at home really disliked the theme this season and really didn't want someone who had already been voted out to win.
I think it was different for the people playing for the reasons mentioned elsewhere in this thread as well as others. First, they seemed more agreeable to "this is the theme, won't punish the player because of it." Makes sense for the returning players to do that because if they just rejected his chance completely because of the theme it probably hurts their chances of being invited back. They might not have been thinking that at the time, but I think it probably crossed (at least one of) their minds. Another reason is that if they dismiss him because he won his way back in it would be dismissing their own chances had they won that final challenge. They were understandably reluctant to do that, especially given what they endured to try and get back in the game. Voting against him because he went to extinction island would've been akin to voting against themselves and if they were going to consider that then they might as well have never even grabbed that torch. Or done what Wendy and the other quitter did. They also knew how hard it was there and some of them probably feel like they played the harder game, sitting out there in worse conditions with less food and no rewards.
I wonder if Gavin's game was too subtle. He never seemed to be a consideration to be voted out which is surprising for someone who wasn't dragged along to the finale. He was a major voice in deciding who to vote out, but it seemed like someone else always got the credit. I don't know if he had one big move (especially near the end) that he could claim. Which really tells me that you can't be loyal and win Survivor. You probably need to be involved in a big blindside which means you need to betray one of your allies.
