I think it's more about their star persona and how that gets them cast in more movies.

Studios don't usually hire Harrison Ford to act, they hire him to be a grouchy adventurer, who is tough on the outside and a softie on the inside with a hint of quiet scholarliness - whether that character is a space pirate or a world-travelling archeologist or a CIA type or president of the United States.
