I’d like to say that James beat himself (in the way that Ken Jennings was finally defeated) but he didn’t.
I’d like to say that it was an epic battle, but it wasn’t.
James’s opponent was just faster on the buzzer. But she’ll be unmemorable, just like the woman who beat Jennings. She’ll be gone in a couple of days.
She found the daily doubles when she had to, and made a big bet when she needed to.
Ultimately, though, if James had won today, he’d surely have beat Jennings’ recording. But he didn’t.
