It's been fairly overblown, but there are still benefits.

I typically wouldn't pre-order a "maybe it'll be good" game. If I know that I'll be getting a game on release day, there's no negative to pre-ordering, as usually there are pre-order bonuses/special promos like the E3 one in Canada/both. It's like you've actually purchased the game yet, so no money is gone.
If you end up deciding against the game, cancel the pre-order or return it in-store/online.
There are different scenarios too. God of War was going to be a top tier game so pre-ordering is fine because you know you're going to get a quality game. Then the other side of the coin, there are games that have huge red flags from the info/betas/etc, like Fallout:76, which people, imo, should absolutely not pre-order.
But at the end of the day, it's your money. Do what you want.
