LeBron as a pseudo-GM got all of these guys signed to multi-year contracts.

They actually have $130 million in cap holds for the 2020-2021 season right now, although they could more easily got out from that.
Right now, they need to trade one of Love, JR Smith, Tristan Thompson, or Brandon Knight. Otherwise, they're screwed. So, they're trying to get creative in finding ways to avoid the luxury tax.
