The areas I was in never *felt* too unsafe, but that's probably partly due to all of the security.

And I was only in 'good' parts. And even there, my co-worker witnessed a guy getting shot at my someone who had (apparently) just robbed a restaurant. (though that's something that could happen in a good part of nyc too, for example.)
But no. No alone in Mexico City for you.
