My gf and I went to Mexico City for about a week the beginning of last year, and had a great time.

We went to most of the touristy places in the city, and felt reasonably safe for most of the time, even in the evening.
The Centro Historico was fine, as was Coyoacan in the south, and the subway. Dodgier areas were Xochimilco (further south) and around Insurgentes (to the west). I am not a big guy, but a woman travelling alone is always a different dynamic.
Also, we ate lots of street food, but neither of us were sick until we over-ate at fancy restaurants
