You'll never be 100 per cent safe anywhere, but you can minimise the risks just by being sensible.

Be alert and aware, check guidebooks etc for advice, don't get super-drunk, always know how to get back to your hotel, etc
My gf has travelled all sorts of places by herself, including Mexico, Belize and Egypt and she's never had any serious problems.
