there are even worse places in that part of the world
now if you have money and time fly to athens spend a few day there and then take the ferryes to the islands like Crete, San Torini (it is very highly recomended most amazing place) rhodes and some of the smaller like lesbos
doing it by deck ride is faily cheap and an experience and pritty save in the backpack season (all summer)
