I think that the visual appearance of each person in the story is viewed through the eyes of the plot's point person. So Natalie looks like that (and IMO, like the fat jokes are completely unfounded) because that's how the PM sees her. And how Colin sees the Wisconsin girls. And how what's her name sees Colin Firth. And how Liam sees Claudia.

You might even be able to say they see through the lens of Love, Actually.
