When they sold most of their assets to Disney, they kept the ones that they consider the core brand. Two of those are Fox and FS1.
With literally tens of billions of cash suddenly available, Fox refused to get beat in any negotiation for products that they wanted. So, they overpaid for WWE (although at least one report indicated that there was an even higher offer on the table that WWE rejected).
All money spent is from Fox for Fox.
(but the sabotage scenario would have been hysterical)
