There was no security to deal with the crowd and one woman got mad at another for smoking in the packed crowd which turned into an argument that lead to the smoker throwing a glass bottle at the complainer. The complainer got hit in the face and had to go to the hospital. That was basically the end of it all for the day as the cops shut it down.

This was some bullshit by Adidas and Arizona. There's no way they didn't know this would happen if they didn't have proper security set up. It's not just because it's NYC because this would happen anywhere that they were giving away sneakers for 99 cents.
They put a lot of people into unsafe conditions and definitely should know better how to release a sneaker or do a pop up shop. There's no excuse for not having proper security to control the line and crowds.
