I dunno about "important games" but basically the group stage of the tournament was a round robin format with every team playing every other team

The four teams at the top of the table went through to semi-finals.
Teams that got rained out were awarded one point each, so teams that were hoping for a win (and would earn two points) were disappointed because they earned less points. There were four games with no result due to rain, all in the qualifying stage.
Also, where teams were tied on points, the team with more wins would be higher on the table. Teams that played in rained out games had fewer wins. I saw a lot of complaints at the time by people who felt it would affect their teams chances, but ultimately it didn't have an impact on which teams went through to the finals.
I'm not sure how it would have cost Disney millions - India went through to the semi-final stage at the top of the table, and one rain-affected match. I'd say that anything that affects a match involving India is significant, but I'd guess India not making it to the final would have had a bigger impact on Disney than a qualifying round game against NZ.
