You obtain a freighter after your 2nd or 3rd warp when you enter a system and it's being attacked by pirates. Defeat the pirates and get the freighter (you can also buy new/upgraded freighters later but they are still really expensive $100K+)
You can build a base on the freighter - so you don't even ever really need a planetary base.
You hire additional ships to add to your fleet. There are different kinds with different strengths and weaknesses. Fighters, scientific, cargo haulers, etc.
You send your fleet on missions to explore or gather rare resources or do military.
You also must maintain the fleet as they encounter hostile forces and will return damaged.
oh, also, you can now have multiple ships of your own and swap between them as needed.
