It turned into a political save. He was there to save them, and could have, but then fucked it up even worse and doomed them all. He couldn't save them all, and if he saved any, they would/could expose that they were there.

The fact that he left them, and in today's world, they could have recorded things on their phones or something that *could* be recovered. I hope something like that shows up in Season 2
