A lot of this things you allude to are the reasons I never felt compelled to go see this. (spoiler)

It always felt like a really mediocre white guy was eventually being lauded/celebrated for being mediocre and not in a 'Death of A Salesman' kind of way. ZZZzzz...
With that said, I'm always pleased when a big hit brings more audiences to the theatre and to musical theatre specifically.
