When I crossed from Michigan into Canada and then back there were signs on both sides of the border cautioning people carrying legal pot.

Recreational marijuana is legal in both places. The Feds control the borders and airports. Federal law applies there. The Toronto airport also had signs saying it was illegal to bring cannabis into Canada even though it's legal in Canada.
