It's not for no reason. We know the many reasons but some are harder to legislate out of the game.

The biggest issue is the dead time between action on the field. The pitching changes being a big one it makes sense to want to limit them. But I don't like it as it affects the strategy of the game in a significant way.
There's a lot of dead time in baseball as well as more batters per game and more pitches per game. Pace of play will help speed games up but if the offenses keep getting better then the games are going to take longer. Also, the more batters strikeout and walk, which are both up, the longer games will be.
It's going to be hard to make baseball a much shorter game.
