YouTube is changing the way music videos are counted after record labels figured out they could buy their way onto the charts.

Labels could buy ads where the music video was played and if only a few seconds of the video appeared in the ad, it counted towards the video's total count. In a system where appearing frequently in the first 24 hours of release is of paramount importance, labels would flood the ad market with buys for their music video, and crush the 24 hour record. YouTube has now eliminated ads from their charts.
