The 25th was added long after the founders were gone. The original was crafted in the era of the Declaration of Independence.

Despite the trial aspect, being obsessed about linking charges to specific law as in a normal court case doesn't apply in the case of the President, and proceeding without any specific legal charge is no way guaranteed to fail. The scope of the situation is very simply what the politicians and the Chief Justice are willing to agree to.
