see, I'm not entirely convinced the surge has succeeded in a long term kind of way.

violence has certainly gone down, but that's largely been achieved by arming everyone to the teeth. you have this kind of detente that's been achieved because everyone knows everyone else has the same pile of american guns. it might well work out in the long run, but it strikes me as a situation that's inherently more unstable, like it could work until US forces start to pull out on a large-scale.
