HD regularly registers 10-12% of DVD sales these days, and sales of HD movies have doubled since HD-DVD died.
You are also ignoring that people need a new tv to take advantage, something that DVD didn't have to deal with and an issue that is surely going to slow adoption. There also is no mandate to rebuy everything because Bluray players play DVDs, so even those that have adopted the format aren't likely to buy very many older movies like they did with DVD.
Besides, anyone arguing the choice hasn't already been made for "the mainstream" by the retail industry isn't paying much attention.
