something along the lines of "the US has a large Muslim population that are a large part of the fabric of American society"

President Obama is an intelligent man and words have meaning, so not only did he come off as factually inaccurate but he came off as pandering to true Muslim countries. It comes off as him *nudging* them with his elbow saying "hey, we're just like you guys" when in fact we're not.
