To some degree this ugliness has always been there, it's just been hidden or kept under wraps.

but I think a lot of this rage of late is a symptom of the last 40 years of conservative activism that's concentrated wealth at the top. At the same time, they've managed to convince people that this isn't happening and that they should blame their lack of opportunities on an "other" (pick it of the day).
And of course, the century of 1860-1960 had a lot of overt hostility and "saying the quiet part loud".
