A lot of stores say they can't give away outdated food, other not quite pretty enough to sell produce because they need to meet the same safety ...

standards/inspections as the stuff in the store adn they could be sued if someone finds bacteria on stuff in the free box out back
I say it's BS, they just don't want to take the time to separate it, have it picked up, its faster to dump it and the clerks can't sneak stuff to compatriots, well gee boss it was old stuff
