It comes down to numbers. If more people self identify as Christian, then you the rest of the world views you as a predominantly Christian country.

Similarly if a majority of the population are athiests, then the world views you (fairly or unfairly) as being a nation predominantly without religion.
It's crude compartmentalising, but there you go. So Israel is a Jewish country, Italy is a Catholic country, and so on and so forth.
