I think that attributes a malice that isn't there (at least consciously).

The freedom to practice religion necessarily runs into conflict among other freedoms in society. That's why there are so many cases on the subject. What is sacred to one may be sacriligious to another. What is freedom of expression to one, may come in conflict with the beliefs of others. So the fact that many people want their view to prevail doesn't mean that they want to take away from others, just that they don't want to compromise their beliefs to those who believe otherwise. There is also a fear factor. It's easier to be a Christian in a "Christian" nation. The more there are of others the more they will fight to maintain their majority. Again, not to impose their beliefs, but to protect their own. It just sometimes has the effect of imposing beliefs and they aren't as concerned with that.
