I think blackface is much less of an issue in Canada than it would've been in the US, I think. way less history and culture behind it there.

plus you'd be hard pressed to pull people to the Conservatives because of it. Enough Liberals were pointing at the Conservatives and saying basically "sure blackface, but 20 years ago and a demonstrably good track record since. Tories wanted Bernier until the last ballot, and had actual racists as candidates (until they got bounced)."

Scheer shot himself in the foot a few times though as well. The dual citizenship business, (probably) hiring the PR firm to go after Bernier, and all the SSM non-answers made him look at least inconsistent, if not hypocritical.
