Don't try writing anything to the drive. I don't know if it's recoverable at home, but if the bytes are salvageable ...

... then you don't want to accidentally overwrite them.

That's step one.

Step two ... either send it to a data recovery specialist, or try poking around with filesystem repair tools. Given the level of importance, the former seems like the correct approach (despite being a bit pricey).
