Yes and what I've learned since then is that some of them are actively assholes and the slice of the electorate who decides knows it

They know a truth: "Well, this asshole is racist, and this asshole is condescending and elitist -- I'll go with the one who promises to help me" (they are of course woefully misguided and confused on that last point)
