I can vouch that family histories often contain stories of native heritage that doesn't end up being true. I grew up being told we were 1/16th Cheroke

Though no one could point to the who in our history that was Native American.
Until things like Ancestry and actual DNA testing allowed verification, it was hard to prove or disprove family stories.
There is zero evidence in the Ancestry stuff I've seen that indicates my family's stories are true.
