No, but a MUCH larger portion of their day is spent gathering what meager food they have, plus the fuel to cook it with.

There is a time element here that I don't think you are seeing.
Working full time, using public transit and being far removed from big-box groceries means that meal prep becomes a bigger part of one's day in the city than for those who have their own transportation and easy access to big-box groceries.
So, if the choice is an hour or more making extra stops to gather the ingredients for a home cooked meal that might take another hour to prepare versus grabbing fast food or ordering in, a lot of people are going to chose the latter to save those 2 hours.
