the full thread of posts I saw earlier tell the story better than those snips. it was going to be closed, instead they let the guy buy most of it,

he simply doesn't have funding (on his own anyway) to keep the full staff; but he's hoping to keep the most popular offerings going and get it to be profitable (which it wasn't).
hopefully he'll get someone else to buy-in and get some more staff back. a reorg like that is more likely to happen with an insider than from a for-profit parent. that the last owner is still keeping a stake is also a promising sign they think he can be successful.
