At just 3 mana, he can be played early very easily (often turn 2).

Even if there's nothing he can directly affect on the board that early, his first ability gives him +2 loyalty, giving him 6, which makes him very difficult to remove without a card that specifically destroys a planeswalker.

His middle ability is inexplicably a +1 instead of a minus. While the intent was likely to turn your own relatively benign things (say the Food token you made with his first ability) into a 3/3 creature, it was almost always used to turn your opponent's best threat into a 3/3 (which is probably worse stats than what it had) and remove whatever ability it may have had that could affect the game. It invalidated so many cards and strategies that they've banned it in three formats and the card has only existed since October.
