I suppose it's not common knowledge. The Wii is a repurposed GameCube.

The processore/graphics aren't identical. The Wii's may be based of the GC's, but they have been improved from the latter. -- nm

Maybe new generations of the same thing. But unlike new generations of PS and Xbox, the underlying guts of the Wii are the same as those of the GC. -- nm

I think I had heard you can use GC controllers on Wii but reusing hardware and those algorithms is normal in most programming -- nm
