I suppose it's not common knowledge. The Wii is a repurposed GameCube.

When it was showed off at E3 for the first time a few years back, the hardware was actually a GameCube hidden under a cardboard box. They've added a desktop interface and extra RAM, but the processor/graphics are the same, which is why you can play old GC games on a Wii without any kind of emulation.
