I asked my neighbor here that goes every year. She said the city center is further south and east of there closer to the port.

She said there would be cheaper hotels and such off Meeting Street down towards Broad but that might be a bit of a walk (the Days Inn is in that area for mapping).
The College of Charleston is right where you're staying so probably most of the cheaper housing would be student, not AirBNB.
