they're not drinking Javex (sodium hypochlorite), they're drinking a mix of sodium chlorite and citric acid - bleach is not a precise term in chemistry and many things are bleaches (perioxides, for instance). This is slightly less bad than laundry bleach, but you know, not good for you.
