I didn't realize that this was enough of a thing to have a term: Kindergarten Redshirting

" In most states, if a child turns five by September 1st, they’re in kindergarten that year."
I lived this but not because of a decision my parents made but because of the above and my October birthday. I wasn't five by Sept or what pre-October cutoff Texas uses.
I never really thought anything of it and I was still among the smallest in my classes. It wouldn't be until college where my being older than my classmates matter as I didn't get my drivers license until I was almost 18.

It’s certainly a thing, but I hadn’t heard of it by that name. -- nm

There are entire communities that encourage it, particularly among boys, for sports.

people in Canada time their babies because of this, but for hockey. January-March kids are drafted more often and earlier than October-December. -- nm

My nephew did this because he was smaller than the other kids.

I didn't get redshirted. I was four when I started Kindergarten, and wouldn't hit five until mid-November
