The Def Leppard thing doesn't work because it's inconsequential. Here we're talking about leading the country and also the party.

If you have only 1/3 of the votes you haven't sufficiently made your case. He still had the chance to make the case and build a coalition but he has to do that.
Let me share my real world similar example. At my firm the partners elect a committee (in a complicated manner) to determine who should serve on the 2 most important committees. The management committee and the compensation committee (that determines how much each partner gets paid). I've been on this skating committee the last 2 years. We also did a vote and speak to each partner to determine preferences and concerns. This year one partner was in the top 5 in building for the comp committee. However, in the one on one interviews he was also singled out as the partner more people specifically did not want on the committee. His views are polarizing. People who agree with him wanted him on. Those who didn't and those who were just concerned about how polarizing he is didn't want him on. In your approach he's automatically on. But those aren't the rules here. We're supposed to use our judgment. Will purple have confidence in the committee if he's on it? Our he's not are there other proponents of his general views there so that we're not disenfranchising people who hold those views? Will his polarizing personality interfere with the committee's operations? This is what we are to decide. The same is true with the delegates. If nobody has a majority they have to consider these things. How Will it affect the party's ability to hold the house, win the Senate, hold state houses and governorships. He has to make the case. Winning 1/3 of the delegates doesn't make the case by itself. Let it play out. Again we could solve this with ranked voting from the start ( a change to or firm's voting process that we're making going forward as well to hello clarify the issues)
