And there's nothing wrong with naming trains by color. Chicago does and it totally works.
The thing with the NYC system is that many trains, that run all over the various boroughs and throughout Manhattan, are color coded based on their trunk line in Manhattan only. And they run together on the trunk line portion. Beyond that, they go all over the place separately from each other.
If you were to get on a 'orange line' train in Manhattan at Bryan Park - 42nd Street heading north, you could end up in:
Harlem (B line)
North Bronx (D line)
Jamaica Queens (F line)
Forest Hills Queens (M train) (or during L construction, the Upper East side of Manhattan)
