The narrative from the earliest beginnings of the election cycle was voters want someone who can beat Trump.

Biden of course had the most name recognition as a two term Vice President. I imagine a year or so ago his favorables/unfavorables were very high was we still had fond memories of the Wacky Uncle Joe memes. The narrative was he was well liked enough to beat Trump. After Hillary (the most qualified presidential candidate ever, but also the victim of a 20 year smear campaign by Fox News to get old people to believe she's the antichrist), people are gun shy about nominating someone like Warren or Bernie over concerns that Trump could win (though they likely wouldn't), plus the usual nonsense about "going too far left."
Despite an awful campaign and mediocre debate performances, Biden was still viewed as "electable" over both Bernie and Warren. The overwhelming victory in South Carolina (seemingly powered by the Clyburn endorsement) solidified that, though the timing of Mayor Pete and Klobuchar to drop out prior to Super Tuesday and endorse Biden is iffy, it consolidated the moderate and "we want a guy that can definitely beat Trump" vote.
