Assuming this is at least partly directed at me, my point is not that it wouldn't be better, but that it's not that simple a calculation.

Sanders asked the question at one debate "if it's so hard, how are they able to do it in Canada and the UK?" The answer is that they did it 50+ years ago, before a massive industry was built around healthcare. The consequences of restructuring it all at once and essentially nationalizing almost 1/5th of the US economy is massive. Healthcare was small and less expensive back then. Richard Nixon considered it in the US back then and was convinced by the insurance industry (and health industry) to back private insurance and create HMO's. It could have been done back then reasonably. Now it would be like trying to turn the Queen Mary in the turning radius of a jet ski.
