Our 32" TV is only 1080i, most of the time it shows in 720p. It looks great to me.

If you're not going with blu-ray, I would think that cheaper option should be fine. In the worst case, if you want to upgrade in a couple of years, you haven't spent a ton of money anyway.
Responses:
some of the HD channels (ABC?) broadcast in 720p anyway. you likely wouldn't really notice that much difference

It's an Acer. We bought it probably 18 months ago, haven't had any issues.
