My first individual stock purchase was AMZN circa 1999. Soon after I made the purchase, it started dropping significantly. I, um, did not like the feeling and pulled out. For the next 5 years it was index only. A cheap, important lesson.
Now I have some individual stocks (<10% of portfolio). I understand and am comfortable with the risk.
