I don't recall exactly how far you ended up getting, but I'm pretty sure I'm further along now in my playthru after 4 sessions than you were. -- (edited)

Seriously, set it on easy so the combat isn't difficult (since I know how much how hated the controls) and let the story unfold.
If you still hate it after completely the story, fair enough.
