They will claim that pandemics or diseases that are wide spread are named after their origin country, like the Spanish flu.

Spain was neutral in World War I. As the war wrapped up and the influenza began to spread, the effect was downplayed (among both sides!) to preserve morale. Much of the reporting on it early on was about how it was ravaging Spain, and that’s how the name stuck here.
