Almost exclusively negative, for me.
Except in sports where a "defensive scheme" just means "a plan".

Not only hear, but if I were describing something I'd use "plan" or "regimen" etc to avoid using the word that might suggest something nefarious. -- nm

Right, context matters. Scheming sounds nefarious in many instances, but it's the sign of quality gameplans in sports.
