There is a legal argument for guns being "essential" under the Heller decision, but as a matter of common sense, I think "essential" is where you find

it.
I might still go out and buy a pistol and maybe another shotgun. If things get really bad, local law enforcement may not be able to respond quickly. And there is a stalker out there still targeting me -- who could be released any day now.
But if I was back on the farm, you're damn right I'd be making sure I was in good shape with weapons and ammunition. In really bad times, the county sheriff might not be able to get to me at all.
